Tokyo, Nov. 7 (Jiji Press) – The number of Japanese restaurants abroad totaled some 118,000 in October, posting a fivefold jump in about 10 years, an agriculture ministry survey showed Tuesday.
In 2006, when the ministry counted the number for the first time, there were some 24,000 Japanese restaurants abroad.
The latest number marked an increase of some 30% from July 2015, when the previous survey was conducted, the ministry said. The pace of growth was particularly fast in Asia, including China, and Central and South America, standing at about 50%.
“Growing inflows of foreign visitors to Japan have been helping the global spread of the Japanese food boom,” Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Saitō Ken said, expressing hopes that the popularity of Japanese restaurants abroad will lead to larger exports of Japanese agricultural and fisheries products.
China has the largest number of Japanese restaurants, at 40,823, followed by the United States with 22,890, Taiwan with 10,920, South Korea with 10,200 and France with 3,620.
