Sumitomo Corporation of Japan has acquired a 48 per cent equity interest in Pacific BioEnergy Corporation (PBEC), one of Canada’s leading producers of wood pellets. It has its head office in Vancouver but its original manufacturing facility is in Prince George on the Willow Cale Forest Service Road, built in 1994 then rebuilt and expanded in 2007.

Tokyo-based digital technology company Konica Minolta will purchase Aliso Viejo-based Ambry Genetics Corp. in a deal valued at up to $1 billion, the companies announced Thursday.

Konica Minolta will pay $800 million when the deal closes and up $200 million more will be paid “based on certain financial metrics over the next two years.” The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval, is expected to close in the third quarter.

TOKYO — Japanese companies increasingly are snapping up foreign businesses, setting their sights abroad as the home market grays.

Overseas mergers and acquisitions by Japanese enterprises topped 10 trillion yen ($80.4 billion) for the first time as of Monday, Tokyo-based M&A adviser Recof said. The year-to-date figure already exceeds the 5.78 trillion yen for all of 2014 by more than 70% and beats the 8.6 trillion yen record set in 2006.
