By hosting the 2014 BIO International Convention, we will have the opportunity to showcase all that San Diego has to offer as a global leader in the life sciences,” said San Diego Interim Mayor Todd Gloria. “San Diego is home to a plethora of top academic and research institutions which have in turn spun out close to 300 companies. These life science start-ups help illustrate how academia and industry continue to foster an environment for collaboration and cures.”
The world’s largest biotechnology gathering, the BIO Exhibition allows exhibitors to reach high-level executives and influential decision makers who come to BIO to discover new players in the industry, form partnerships and evaluate emerging technologies. The BIO Exhibition features more than 1,700 exhibitors and covers approximately 180,000 square feet. The exhibition also includes 60+ state, regional and country pavilions who in turn host many companies from their regions.
Conveniently organized by product focus, the exhibition includes companies in the Digital Health Zone, Innovation Zone, BioProcess Zone, Bio IT Zone, Business Services Zone, Contract Services Zone, and Discovery Zone. In 2014 the BIO Exhibition will host thousands of organizations including the leading biotech companies, top 25 pharma companies, top 20 CROs and CMOs, more than 300 academic institutions including the major research labs and government agencies and the leading consultants and service companies.

The Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) is coordinating the Japan Pavilion at the 2014 BIO International Convention (BIO 2014), to be held at the San Diego Convention Center from Tuesday, June 24 to Thursday, June 26. Nineteen Japanese companies will be on display in the Pavilion (Booth 525), representing some of Japan’s most innovative biotechnology.

Key technologies to be exhibited at BIO 2014 include new treatments for oncology, pain management, cognitive and neurological disorders; advancements in regenerative medicine; drug discovery tools; and contrast manufacturing and R&D. Three of the companies in the Japan Pavilion will be representing technologies developed at some of Japan’s leading universities. In addition, three of the organization are exhibiting at the BIO Convention for the first time:
- World Fusion Co., Ltd., a Tokyo-based software & services company, which provides tools for drug discovery, genomics research and date mining.
- Molcure Inc., a start-up company from Tokyo, which manufactures new antibody drugs using automated robotic technology.
- Medical & Biological Laboratories Co., Ltd. from Nagoya, which develops reagents for clinical & research applications, including specialized reagents for genetic research.

Japan is the second-largest life science market in the world, accounting for approximately 10% of the global market for drug and medical device sales. In 2012, revenues for the Japanese biotechnology market totaled more than $43.4 Billion; by 2017, the market is expected to grow to $54.8 Billion.
The annual BIO Convention, organized by the Biotechnology Industry Organization, is the largest event for the biotechnology sector, attracting over 16,000 attendees from all over the world. JETRO has organized the Japan Pavilion at the BIO Convention since 2003.
